MONSTER

Regarding the design of the monster, in my initial thinking I wanted him to be an oversized monster – which would be full of dramatic conflict in the composition, with a human-sized protagonist against an oversized creature. So my references centred on large traditional monsters, and because the turbid half means water and lives in darkness, the monster ended up being a combination of a snake and a fish. And because the design is related to the background and light and shadow, the Dragon Palace from Gujian 3 became my reference, which is a shadow puppet construction of the Dragon Palace, the characters are all performed on a flat surface, but the effect of the performance is very wonderful because of the colour and design.

Taint is pronounced as turbid (zhuó), which originally meant cloudy water. on the other hand, is a villainous figure, so his symbols are not as calm and solid as He Ming’s, but rather very sharp and aggressive. His symbols are combined with the shape of monsters in Chinese artefacts to make a monster in the shape of a snake, and because he moves at night and is affected by light, he uses shadow, a traditional art of light and shadow, as the monster’s body.

Because the masks made me think of the various human emotions, and the four main emotions in the tradition are joy, anger, sadness and happiness, so I made a mask programme for each. And because of the water-related, in the choice of pattern generally the first one will think of seawater river cliff pattern, that is, the seawater lapping the cliffs of the river into the pattern.Taint body will also have a lot of fins like the floating pattern, the Taint body will also have a lot of fins like the floating pattern.
